What is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill (also called “medical abortion”) uses drugs to end a pregnancy. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone that helps the pregnancy develop, and without it, the uterine lining thins, and the pregnancy detaches and ends. 

The second drug is called misoprostol. This drug causes your uterus to contract, which expels the pregnancy and related tissues from the body. 

If you take these drugs, you will experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding. You could also have other side effects, including headaches, diarrhea, fever, chills, upset stomach, and vomiting. 

Understanding Eligibility

If you meet specific ineligibility criteria, you may not be able to take abortion drugs. According to Mayo Clinic, the procedure isn’t an option if you: 

• Are too far along in your pregnancy (the abortion pill is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation, while Mayo Clinic states that it shouldn’t be attempted if you are past 11 weeks gestation)
• Have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place
• Have a suspected ectopic pregnancy 
• Have certain medical conditions, including anemia, certain bleeding disorders, chronic adrenal failure, certain heart or blood vessel diseases, severe liver, kidney, or lung disease, or an uncontrolled seizure disorder
• Take a blood thinner or certain steroid medicines
• Can’t reach a health professional by phone or online (or if you don’t have access to emergency care)
• Have an allergy to the drugs used
