Before getting an abortion, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • How far along am I in my pregnancy?
  • Could I naturally miscarry?
  • Do I have an ectopic pregnancy?
  • Is someone forcing me into having an abortion?
  • What abortion procedures are available to me?
  • What kind of rights do I have with abortion providers?
  • What are the short-term and long-term risks of abortion?
  • What are my other options and would they work for my situation?

Abortion Procedures

RU-486 (The Abortion Pill)

This drug is FDA-approved for use in women who are up to 10 weeks pregnant.  This procedure can be completed at home and involves taking several pills to induce heavy cramps that will expel the contents of the uterus vaginally.

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortions are completed in a medical facility and may require varying amounts of anesthesia and pain medicine. This method can be used for first-trimester pregnancies as well as pregnancies that are much further along. During a surgical abortion, the cervix is dilated and the pregnancy is removed using forceps, suction or other medical equipment.

No matter what option you choose, it’s important to remember that having an abortion is a medical procedure – whether you have one at home or in a clinic. Each procedure comes with different risks and side effects, so take the time you need to learn about abortion before making a decision.

What to do Before Having an Abortion

Before having an abortion, you should first confirm that you are pregnant and that your pregnancy is viable, meaning that it can be carried to term. We offer both pregnancy testing and ultrasounds free of charge, which can answer both of these questions for you.

After confirming your pregnancy, your next step is to discuss your options with someone you trust. That could be a friend, a family member, or even a staff member at Azar House. We offer free and confidential options education, where we can give you information on adoption, abortion and parenting, while answering any questions and addressing any concerns you may have about each.
